Wai Tan (The Bund)

Situated on the banks of the Huang Pu River the Bund is Shanghai's most famous district. The architecture of this old commercial area is mostly pre-1937 and the waterfront boulevard contains many of the city's famous old banks and trading houses. Now a popular site for both tourists and locals.

Yuyuan (Yu Garden)

This complex of markets, parks and temples offers a rare taste of old Shanghai. The halls, chambers, towers and pavilions, plus the rockeries and flowing streams were inspired by the Ming and Qing Dynasty garden design of South China.

Jade Buddha Temple 170 Anyuan Lu, Shanghai
In 1882 Monk Huigen brought two jade Buddha statues from Burma and built a temple to enshrine them. The statues are famous in the Buddhist world and ceremonies are regularly held here.

Heping Fandian (The Peace Hotel)

This is one of Shanghai's most treasured old buildings and has much of its interior decoration and exterior splendour still intact. Formerly the Cathay Hotel, the most famous hotel in Shanghai, it occupies both sides of the road and is home to the Jazz Bar, is legendary for its dance band. Worth visiting for the art deco interiors of the lobby.
